Jordan Henderson breaks silence after freak England injury at World Cup
The 36-year-old has provided an update on his condition after suffering a horrific injury in a freak accident
Jordan Henderson has broken his silence after suffering an injury that is expected to rule him out for the rest of the World Cup. The England international was involved in a freak accident following the final whistle after Thomas Tuchel's men celebrated their 3-2 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
The 36-year-old sustained a badly broken wrist after falling awkwardly when attempting to climb over advertising boards to celebrate with the travelling fans. He was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher, needed oxygen and was rushed to hospital for treatment while the rest of the squad flew back to Kansas City.
It was announced on Monday that the veteran midfielder will undergo surgery and will now miss the rest of the World Cup. It could well be Henderson's final action as an England player as the World Cup is expected to be his final tournament.
But the Brentford star refused to let the incident dampen his spirits as he provided his first update since the injury. Taking to social media, Henderson reflected on the events in Mexico City rather than the severity of his injury.
"A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges," Henderson said on Instagram. "So proud to be a part of this special team [emojis]. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."
His England colleagues were quick to respond. Vice-captain Declan Rice wrote in the comments: "Some man," while Morgan Rogers responded: "What a guy." Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence also displayed their affection with 'heart' emojis to the stricken midfielder.
Henderson is keen to stay with the rest of the squad to offer his support and has been in regular touch with his team-mates. England defender Guehi gave an update on Henderson's state of mind after the devastating injury.

Guehi told the FA’s Lions’ Den show: “Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery.”
Henderson, who won his 90th cap for England when he came off the bench against Panama in the Group stage, is the only England men's player to feature at four World Cup tournaments. Tuchel opted to bring him for his experience and leadership in the dressing room, despite widespread opposition to his selection.
It remains to be seen whether Henderson will be with the squad for their quarter-final against Norway on Saturday. But, speaking about his inclusion in June, Henderson said he would be ready to support his team-mates on and off the pitch no matter what.

"It’s the same as always, to be the best version of myself, to be ready to help the team on and off the pitch and give absolutely everything to help this team be successful," Henderson said in June.
"The last few years has been a bit of a roller coaster, to say the least, but I’ve worked very hard to be in this position and made a lot of sacrifices, and I’m just very grateful and honoured to be here.
"It’s about giving absolutely everything to make the nation back home very proud of us and to do that, we need to just be ourselves."
