FBI probes Argentine FA and TourProdEnter agent over potential $330m fraud
July 10 – Argentina’s bid for a fourth World Cup title is unfolding against the backdrop of a major financial investigation, with the FBI reportedly examining hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions linked to the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Federal authorities are reportedly investigating the AFA over possible fraud and money laundering connected to more than $300 million that allegedly passed through American banks and companies.
Argentine newspaper La Nación, has reported that FBI agents and federal prosecutors have begun gathering testimony against the AFA, though to date no criminal charges have been brought in either the United States or Argentina, and neither the US Department of Justice nor the FBI has publicly confirmed the investigation.
The inquiry centres on TourProdEnter LLC, a Florida-based company established in 2021 that acted as the AFA’s international commercial agent. The company received close to $300 million between 2022 and mid-2024 through accounts at several major American banks, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, PNC and Synovus.
Those funds allegedly came from the federation’s overseas commercial activities, including sponsorship agreements, international friendlies and media rights.
The FBI is examining whether the money has been properly accounted for, taxed and ultimately used for federation business.
The investigation follows a separate civil dispute brought by Argentine sports promoter Guillermo Tofoni, who is suing the AFA over commercial rights relating to international friendly matches. Court proceedings in Georgia have detailed banking records connected to TourProdEnter – though the judge has kept fine detail of those records sealed while litigation is on-going.
Tofoni has declined to discuss the evidence but said: “Speaking generally, I believe that any review of international commercial arrangements should focus on transparency, the movement of funds, and whether all transactions were conducted in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework. Ultimately, it is for the competent authorities to establish the relevant facts and reach their own conclusions.”
TourProdEnter has rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing. The AFA has also denied wrongdoing in previous financial investigations in Argentina, arguing that scrutiny of its finances has been politically motivated.
The sponsorship marketing programme of the Argentine football has been successfully built around their World Cup 2022 win and superstar Lionel Messi.
The investigation comes as at awkwards time for Lionel Scaloni’s side that left it late to beat Egypt 3-2 in a controversial last-16 encounter that sparked debate over the neutrality of FIFA’s officiating once again. Egypt were left furious by what felt like one-way refereeing traffic, accusing the officials of fixing the game.
Argentina continue their pursuit of World Cup glory in the quarter final against Switzerland on Sunday, while serious questions hang over the organisation running the country’s most valuable sporting asset.
