
The closing out of the World Cup round of 16 fixtures was as controversial as it was dramatic. The controversy began before a last 16 ball was kicked and surrounded whether Foralin Balogun should have had his red card rescinded under FIFA’s rules, and the political implications of allowing government pressure to dictate governing body decision making directly related to the playing of the game. It raises multiple uncomfortable questions for the whole of FIFA and every aspect of its mission.
